Regarding Strict Lock

Greetings.

Appreciate the new feature! Though I'm here to ask for a different icon for the strict-locked notes, since right now I can't differentiate them from normal locks and it's getting kinda messy. Having an option to toggle between "old / new" icons would be good, as I know some would rather have one single icon for all their notes.

Also regarding strict locks: why do we have to unlock a normal-locked note in order to strict-lock it? Why not just jump between them? It honestly can be pretty tedious having to do these extra steps, and I'm currently using a big vault on mobile so it takes even more time to go through it all

One more thing! Currently when I open a normal-locked note it immediatly locks itself again, preventing edit mode. This never happened before so I don't think it's normal, right? I truly hope it's not a function change and it might not be, considering "strict locks" are a thing now. If you need furtger information feel free to ask.

I agree that it's so messy. Instead of making a different icon, I think about changing the color of strict lock icon. Maybe I will add an option to settings to change color of both icons, normal lock and strict lock.

This is an intentional change. Since you mentioned that, I think I will try to add an option to settings to choose how it should behave.

I will leave this issue opened, so when a new version be ready, I will inform you.

Anything that differentiates them is good. I was thinking about maybe a lock + key or just a key icon to keep the current colors, but I honestly don't mind.

Exactly. Now, doing so the other way around (change to "normal" lock) is up to you, as some may change it by mistake, thus missing the point of making it hard to unlock.

Please update Note Locker to 1.3.1. I've restored old behavior in the new version and made new behavior optional, as I said in a previous post.

I'm currently testing this out. If "Prevent editing in locked notes" is disabled, normal locks work as usual: open a locked note and it is locked; but if you switch to editing mode and open another note, that note won't be locked by default, and it will be on editing mode instead as well. I hope this explanation make sense.

Now, if "Prevent editing in locked notes" is enabled, normally lockes notes become 100% locked, while strict-locked notes still have an option to switch.

This seems to be intentional, but currently normal locks are fully locked, while strict locks can be unlocked. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

TL;DR

With new setting disabled:

• Normal locks only behave as expected with the first note. If said note turns to "edit", any other note will be automatically unlocked.

With new setting enabled:

• Normal locks behave as strict locks should — without any editing / switch mode options.

I'm honestly kind of satisfied with this, as I have both an option to "never edit again" and one to keep editing, while preventing accidental changes. Still, can't help but feel like — by definition — normal and strict locks are swapped.

This doesn't matter to me as stated earlier, but it might matter to you, unless I understood their purposes wrongfully. If you plan on either change this or keep it as is, I'll ask you to please let me know before I do any big changes to my vault.

Clarification needed on “lock” vs “strict lock” behavior.

I’m still a bit confused about the difference between “lock” and “strict lock”.
When I activate “strict lock” on an unlocked note, I get this popup:

"The note is strictly locked to prevent accidental editing.
Are you sure you want to unlock?"

I’m not sure what this means or how it’s intended to work.

Could the README include a clear explanation of each option and its effect?

The pop-up asks for confirmation prior unlock, adding an extra layer of security to prevent accidental edits. Once locked, you'll only unlock the note by confirming the action via said pop-up.

Currently, the strict lock is supposed to be safer, while the normal lock is the most safe option at the time of writing.

Now, I have earlier stated the following:

(I) can't help but feel like — by definition — normal and strict locks are swapped (…) unless I understood their purposes wrongfully.

I'm still awaiting for a response regarding these changes and if they're going to be permanent or swapped. Confusion seems to exist, and — again — this topic might matter to you @Felvesthe.

Setting aside the naming of the normal and strict lock for a moment:
I think you may not be seeing what I mean with the unexpected message.

The dialog asks whether I want to unlock the stricktly locked note, even though the note isn’t locked at all (no lock icon in the file navigator). When I press 'cancel' it becomes 'strictly locked'. That’s simply not logical, I think there is a conditional to fire this popup-message that is buggy.

I also agree that the terminology is confusing. Personally, I think a simple lock (a lock on the preview mode) would be sufficient; I don’t have any other requirements. But that’s why I’d like to understand from the author what the exact functional intention is.

I did this change quickly without thinking, just to "fix" the problem of invalid behavior of editing a normally locked note. When I think about it now, it doesn't make any sense. I have to sit and reconsider that - the Strict Lock function will stay there in the form as it is (well, I will add only the improvements you asked for in the first message, so a different icon and possibility between a normally locked note and a strictly locked one). I have to rethink the functionality of normally locked notes, but for now the best solution I see is removing the option to prevent editing in normally locked notes and just keeping the logic used before the 1.3.0 update (so normally locked notes can be edited after clicking on the edit button). I think it will keep the plugin simple, and the base functionality won't be affected by new functions like Strict Lock.

@RikRoos sorry for confusing you. After I provide a proper fix for the plugin's functionality and logic, I will update the documentation as well. The idea of the Strict Lock function was the possibility to avoid unlocking notes accidentally. The proper dialog should be shown while trying to unlock a strictly locked note.

That's weird and shouldn't happen. Could you provide some more details about this situation? How did you start the process of unlocking the strictly locked note while the note wasn't locked at all?

Okay, here are the steps I followed:

1. I closed and restarted Obsidian just to be sure.
2. I navigate to the vault where I installed the plugin.
3. I click a note in the file navigator that currently has no lock icon.
4. The note opens in edit mode (the icon next to the hamburger menu shows an open book), and “unlocked” is displayed in the bottom-right corner. So until now, nothing new.
5. I right-click the note and choose “strict lock.”
6. I immediately get a popup saying: “Strictly Locked Note … sure to unlock?”. This popup should not appear.
7. If I click UNLOCK, the note stays unlocked, but if I click CANCEL, the note becomes LOCKED, and only then does the lock icon appear.

When Obsidian starts en the notes start in view-mode then everything goes well; in that case I cannot right click the note but click the hamburger and choose 'strick lock', everthing goes as expected.

By the way, I’m working in VIM mode.

Apologies if I misunderstood your message. You asked for what's the difference between them and how they're expected to work, to which I gave you my explanation. The "naming issue" wasn't directed towards your question, but since that was a pretty recent change (including the addition of strict lock overall) they could've been related in my opinion.

Appreciate the response and glad we're all on the same page regarding the name. Even if it might seem like a small detail, it was driving me nuts. I even worked around it by editing both main.js and data.js and replacing "strict" with "soft" lmao.

If I may suggest something, the current normal lock works great as a fully unlockable note — this one truly feels strict. You said you would "keep the logic used before" and it was pretty good, but the current one works flawlessly in my opinion, just needs a swap.

Regarding the issue RikRoos discussed; I also had a similar situation happen to me, but only twice.

This was all done in mobile before the latest update:

I just opened a note that wasn't locked and the pop-up appeared behind the device's navigation bar. As the buttons were hidden behind other buttons, I was unable to interact with it. Restarted Obsidian and it happened again later on with another note, but never again since.

Take your time to tackle these issues mate. I honestly just needed to know if a change was planned or not to adapt my workflow. This is all open source after all, so no pressure. Appreciate your work very much and really love the plugin, so thank you :)
