Description

Since a few days I get the error below each time I visit my FlowCrypt-enabled Gmail accounts in Google Chrome:

Failed to update FlowCrypt Client Configuration: BgNotReadyErr: BrowserMsg.sendAwait((inMemoryStoreGet) failed with lastError: Could not establish connection. Receiving end does not exist. (BgNotReadyErr)

I have multiple FlowCrypt-enabled Gmail accounts and all show this error.

Other symptoms:

  • if you visit a Gmail account that is not (yet) setup for FlowCrypt, you'll notice a small yellow "Set up FlowCrypt" window at the top of the screen showing 3 options: Yes, Remind me later, and Don't remind again.
Clicking option YES does nothing -- no response.

  • clicking the FlowCrypt icon in the Google Chrome extension bar at the top right shows message:
Extension not ready. Restarting the browser should help.
Restarting the browser has no effect and does not solve the issue.

  • in Google Chrome, select Extensions > Manage Extensions and locate the FlowCrypt tile. Click icon Details which opens up the FlowCrypt extension Details page. In this page, locate line Extensions options and click the icon at the far right, forwarding you to the FlowCrypt Settings page for your email address. The top center shows error:
    ecp error

  • in the same FlowCrypt page for your email address, click the green BACKUP icon. A log window appears showing error:
Could not check for backups: Extension not ready. Restarting the browser should help. (Error: BgNotReadyErr: BrowserMsg.sendAwait(inMemoryStoreGet) failed with lastError: The message port closed before a response was received.). retry

  • at the bottom left of the browser window, a grey status line is shown with error:
    v:8.5.11 g:?:err fc:error local_store
NOTE: g:?:err is displayed in red.

In order to isolate the cause of the issue I performed the following steps:

  • restarted Google Chrome -- no effect
  • reset the FlowCrypt extension permissions -- no effect
  • toggle the FlowCrypt extension, with and without Google Chrome restart -- no effect
  • disabled all other extensions one by one to check if any interfered with FlowCrypt -- no effect
  • temporarily disabled VPN to check if the VPN interfered with FlowCrypt -- no effect
  • temporarily disabled performance settings in Google Chrome -- no effect
  • temporarily disabled memory saving settings in Google Chrome -- no effect
  • temporarily disabled graphics acceleration settings in Google Chrome -- no effect
  • cleaned out the Windows %TEMP% folder -- no effect

Versions involved:

  • FlowCrypt extension: 8.5.11
  • Google Chrome: 137.0.7151.55 (64-bit), 137.0.7151.56 (64-bit)
  • Windows 10 Pro 22H2 (OS Build 19045.5854)
