No, this is not supported. We have discussed it as a possibility for both biperiodic and limited area model domains, but it's a matter of priorities. Were we to do it, we could reconsider other aspects of the file format. For example, one could do without the comprehensive description of the mesh that UGRID requires. |

I have a question about LFRic in an idealised bi-periodic cartesian geometry setup.
Is there an existing configuration for LFRic output to be on a 2D x-y grid. By default, the data are written on the native unstructured grid, so even though the grid is planar, the output is 'flattened' w.r.t. to both longitude & latitude (which are actually x/y distances). It's relatively easy to reshape the data when one loads it in iris but it would be great to write it on a 2D x-y grid in the first place.
Are there any existing solutions in XIOS?
