I started this "283" suite of coupled cases to troubleshoot the C-balance error that Cecile encountered in her 280 case NCAR/cesm_dev#249.

Starting from Cecile's b.e30_alpha08a.B1850C_LTso.ne30_t232_wgx3.283 NCAR/cesm_dev#252, which was vanilla alpha08a but reverted crop calendars and paramfile to ctsm5.4.002 (and did not crash):

• 283b used crop calendars consistent with ctsm5.4.003, so reverted the paramfile only (and did not crash)
• 283c used the paramfile from 5.4.003, so reverted crop cals only: CRASHED EXACTLY AT THE END OF year 14
• 283d used ctsm5.4.005 i.e. paramfile and crop cals consistent with ctsm5.4.004: CRASHED EXACTLY AT THE END OF year 19
• 283e used ctsm5.4.005 but reverted mxmat for pft 67 in the latest paramfile from 360 to 300 (and did not crash)
• 283f is like 283d but has the code-fix that I developed by troubleshooting 283d with restart files from the timestep before the crash, plus a new test paramfile:
  • The fix accounts for harvesting crops that have only partly emerged.
  • The new paramfile = '/glade/work/linnia/CLM6-PPE/ctsm6_cal/paramfiles/ctsm60_params.c251211_BETTmedlynslope3.5.nc' was provided by @linniahawkins.
• 283g as (f) but with paramfile = '/glade/work/linnia/CLM6-PPE/ctsm6_cal/paramfiles/ctsm60_params.c260204.nc'
• 283h as (g) but as discussed here user_nl_clm adds:

• b.e30_alpha08a.B2000C_LTso.ne30_t232_wgx3.283h is B2000 equivalent of 283h (cloned from the next one) using 2002 restart files from simulation 271
• b.e30_alpha08a.B2000C_LTso.ne30_t232_wgx3.283i is B2000 equivalent of 283i (used create_newcase, see above) using 2002 restart files from simulation 271
• b.e30_alpha08a.B2000C_LTso.ne30_t232_wgx3.283j is like the last two B2000 cases but with the 283g paramfile
• b.e30_alpha08a.BHistC_LTso.ne30_t232_wgx3.283h is BHist equivalent of 283h (used create_newcase, see above) using 1994 restart files from simulation 271
• b.e30_alpha08a.BHistC_LTso.ne30_t232_wgx3.283i is BHist equivalent of 283i using 1994 restart files from simulation 271

LDF for cases 283f vs. 283d are here (where f has lower medlyn slope for PFT4). NOTE climos here are for the full 20 year timeseries. Given the drops we're seeing in some variables in the first 10 years I'm going to repeat the analysis just focus on the last 10 years.
