Cloud platforms, managed services, Kubernetes, SaaS, “it just works” tooling… all of it has made IT faster and easier in a lot of ways, sure..... But it’s also created an uncomfortable side effect: fewer people truly understand how the systems they manage actually work.
That’s not nostalgia talking. It becomes a real problem when:
I think most of us SysAdmins can say that we’re not anti-abstraction. We are worried about what happens when abstraction replaces understanding instead of building on top of it.
