Hey there Dan. Great to hear your story. Myself on somewhat similar path. But I started as backend engineer hence your insights of help desk do serve great purpose. Questions: |

Heya, glad you enjoyed the post! Let me start by saying I'm no expert here. You seem to have the technical expertise and motivation, but may be lacking in work tenure. I've seen a bunch of folks at Google lean on their open-source contributions as a pool of knowledge, so you're on the right track. Applying is generally not a bad idea, as you can always apply when you have more experience as well. I've found internships to be a great source of experience, and a great way to determine whether you're actually interested in any given field. In general, a good starting point for SRE would be to check out the Google SRE books. A good example of content from these books is the chapter on NALSD. |

I'm 5 months into helpdesk and I will be moving up. Since getting my first job in the industry, I haven't been taking charge of my goals as much as I should be. I had not heard of SMART before, but I am going to integrate it into my life to help keep me on track. Thanks for writing this post. |
