Build issue with cocotb

When I compile the project in WSL, error occurs:
cocotb-config: error: unrecognized arguments: --prefix
cocotbvpi_icarus: Unable to find a 'cocotbvpi_icarus.vpi' module on the search path.

My cocotb-config version is 2.0.0, no '--prefix' option for this version.
The workaround for me is to modify the Makefile and specify the full path to cocotb/libs instead of using $(cocotb-config --prefix)/cocotb/libs.

The final solution is: pip install cocotb==1.7.2
For anyone else experiencing the same issue.

Any workaround? Can we advise the creation of a new virtualenv for this by default? (so far i see only cocotb==1.7.2 is required from pip).
