How to get started contributing? #2

First of all, let me say that I'm very happy to see this project continued! I was very sad to see the original Inkpad disappear, only to get replaced with a deluge of cheap clones.

I was wondering how one should go about getting started working on this project.

I managed to clone it into Xcode (11.3 -- the latest version available on Mojave), and building it works, but unfortunately I encountered a bug where the Simulator is unable to create new files (which makes it difficult to test out changes!)

I tried searching for solutions to this, but it seems the most common suggestion is to update to a newer Xcode (and hence macOS), which I'm reluctant to do as my only mac is getting quite old by now.

So then I thought I could perhaps just run it directly on my iPad (which is much more recent than my mac).

Unfortunately, this also fails, because the iCloud capabilities are not available to people with mere Apple ID accounts. It seemingly requires an Apple Developer Account, and I'm not sure I'm willing to give money to Apple (to work on an open source project!) just on the off-chance that this will work.

Is there any way to get around this iCloud issue?
