Initializing columns for half-life exclusion/inclusion and also censoring

I'm looking through these examples here:

And from those I believe I should be initializing these flagging columns (exclude, include, and censor) as NA_character_ and then just set the records to TRUE where I want to apply the flag. Is that correct? Something like this:

expts = c(4, 8, 10)
data_conc$exclude = NA_character_
data_conc$exclude[expts] = TRUE
