Pi 7" Screen - doesn't wake

Hi and thanks for all the work you've done.
I've installed a brand new install on a 3B and Raspberry Pi 7" touch screen (about 5 years old) Everything works great except if the screen goes to sleep it never wakes up. The Pi is still running and web services work.

Rebooting the Pi doesnt fix the screen its stays blank, Power cycling brings it back again.

Changing timeout to Never in the GUI works and the screen stays on as expected
Any ideas

I have no idea what's going on. It can't be software if a reboot doesn't fix it.

What happens with Raspberry PI OS?
