Goal is to share what it can look like. Eli & Julie to share our stories to different audiences from what you all have been working on so far. Not an “intro to Openscapes” talk - sharing how we work in modernizing data access, writing up documentation, making it so not everyone has to discover how to do it.

We’ve scheduled April 25 at 12pm PT for a talk with Eli Holmes & Julie Lowndes to talk about Better Science in Less Time: yes it is possible! I’ve been working with them and the NMFS Openscapes Mentors to incorporate open science approaches into an AST Lab Manual and will share more of my work in progress.

Eli & Julie will share “how we work” examples from groups across NOAA Fisheries that are modernizing different parts of their regular workflows together, whether it is data access and analysis, writing up documentation, organizing inventories, cruise planning, shared to-do lists for contracts, or reusing templates from a different part of NOAA Fisheries
making it so not everyone has to discover how to do it.

Some example highlights are:

• Ways SEFSC is using GitHub to track fishery stock assessment projects, surveys, and branch project management... 4-min video (anchored from 25:00-29:27)
• Ways California EPA is using GitHub and templates for contracting… 5-min video (anchored from 6:18-11:25) managing 14 water quality contracts, $60 million. Naming things, how we organize our files was key, planning for “future us” - how we can slowly but intentionally shift our daily tasks to make it easier the next time for ourselves and others.
• Ways the Passive Acoustics Monitoring group is creating re-usable manuals as methods to document institutional knowledge and provide information on procedures, field methods, analysis, inventory, and onboarding materials. They use GitHub PMNM-ARCamps-Proj-Mgmt-TASKS and a website to organize ALL resources for annual seasonal field researchers who are being deployed PMNM-ARCamps-Manual!

Hi Julia -- I will add some slides to the bottom of this ppt tomorrow morning (probably one slide) highlighting the AST Lab Manual. Can't wait to have you all share with the team tomorrow! We've got some people joining virtually and some in person at a conference room at SWFSC.
