assign a variable to channel data

Hi i'm a python newbie. I have your code working but want to assign a variable to individual channel data so I can interrogate the value to detect forward/reverse, left and right . This information can be used to drive a tracked radio controlled vehicle via python code I already use.
Any help would really be great.
