this is by far my favorite git encryption method I have found thus far. far and away I think the best on the internet.. Is this project dead?? Just seems like such a shame if so??

I still have plans of porting the current Python POC code to C code that integrates better into main git sources, if there is interest, maybe even contributing it there. At the moment I am just too busy with other things, that's why there was no activity from my side recently. Obviously the more people show interest, the more it might rise in my personal priority list.
Does the current state work for you at least as it is?

Yes, it works great! I've got it fully set up and integrated into my workflow. Here's how I'm using it:

Setup:

• Cloned your repo and added it to my PATH
• Only dependency needed was pip install pygit2 (clean and simple)

My workflow:

1. git init a new repository
2. Initialize encryption: git incrypt init incrypt::git@github.com:user/repo.git my_gpg_key
3. git remote add origin incrypt::git@github.com:user/repo.git
4. Then normal git operations: git add, commit, push - everything pushed to remote is automatically encrypted with my GPG key

Accessing from another machine:
On a second system with my GPG key available, I just:

1. git init in a new directory
2. git remote add origin incrypt::git@github.com:user/repo.git
3. git pull - and I'm ready to go

What I love about git-incrypt:

• Full repository encryption: Files, directories, commit history - everything's encrypted
• Automatic large file handling: Seems to handle large files seamlessly
• Clean integration: Once set up, it feels like normal git with encryption happening transparently

One note: I haven't been able to git clone directly - I need the manual init/remote add workaround. But honestly, this is minor compared to the benefits.

I'm genuinely interested in contributing. The Python POC works well, and potentially could help develop the port you mentioned. This project is jam up man..

That was exactly one of the main design goals: Keep every git operation that does not require the user to do some special interaction due to encryption to stay fully transparent, since we neither want to break user experience, not any scripts operating on such repositories, as long as this is not systematically implied by the fact that it is encrypted.

One note: I haven't been able to git clone directly - I need the manual init/remote add workaround. But honestly, this is minor compared to the benefits.

I think I also saw this once during development phase, but the problem disappeared without me understanding the root case back then. As such I assumed that the development state might just have been inconsistent.

Now, that you are seeing this, it seems we have a bug here or there is something different in your system that the current implementation does not expect. Can you elaborate how the tool behaves if you attempt to clone directly?

You can find some initial steps for a C port in the cport branch. I just found that some clean-up is needed there to make this work again on a recent glibc. So, if you want to dive into the porting business, this is probably the place to start. If you mostly want to use it, at this point in time I recommend staying with the Python implementation until the C port is feature complete.

I was also unhappy with the other approaches for my use cases since they either just encrypted on a file level, which leaves the repository structure unencrypted or they encrypted just the backend storage, making incremental git operations horribly inefficient. This is why I started this project.
