Menu fails to notify about unread messages

The README says:

The icon lights up when you receive notifications from the listed applications, so you won't miss another message.

However, nothing like that happens here. I am using Thunderbird and have the GNonitfy extension installed, so the shell knows when I receive mail -- but there is no change in the message menu icon. How does this part of the integration work anyway?

I also 'use' Messaging Menu on Ubuntu 17.10 and Thunderbird (I have not installed GNotify as far as I know). The MM icon on the top panel does include Thunderbird but does not in any way indicate a received email message (even though Ubuntu Dock does). 'Email Notification' switch is ON in the MM settings. Is this a bug? Or is there something I need to do for it to work?
