Windows: EXE will not work.

In Windows10 (and possibly others), when launching the exe the small UI window pops up, but nothing appears in the task bar, and no messages are received even though we expect them (such as arduino not found). However, we know it's not crashing. 

However, the program works just fine before it is exported to an exe.

Possible to debug this: insert popup messages to see how far the code is getting.
