Change Input System

I really like this template to make a game, but I'm curious if the control scheme for the plane controller can be used with keyboard as well? Since it uses 8 cardinal directions for a control stick, how could I instead use, say, the numpad of a keyboard for those inputs?
That would be a big help and would like to learn how that could work.
