Make font loading more robust

Targeting Raspberry Pi has exposed flaws in how we handle font loading on startup. In essence, there appears to be a semi-hard limit on the number of font textures that can be loaded. It would be useful to prevent the application from crashing and ideally be able to inform the user about the issue. I believe this is mentioned in a README file already but it should be more obvious/straightforward.
