This includes quite a few changes, but the overarching one is as the title suggests.
In addition, this includes alternate username fields on the given model, as per whatever the end user configures for Devise. This allows a field like "login" or "username" instead of "email". This part is a business requirement for my use case and I thought I'd contribute it back to the original project.
