**GPU Access on KVM**

KVM now has GPUs available on `CHI@KVM`. Due to popular demand, launching an instance on a GPU-enabled flavor requires a reservation, similar to bare metal resources on Chameleon. Unlike bare metal reservations, these VM reservations require the user to select a particular GPU-enabled `flavor`, rather than a physical resource type. In the documentation below, we explicitly call out, where relevant, the different steps needed for creating GPU-enabled instances. KVM access for non-GPU instances is still available without a reservation.

This section is only relevant for users who wish to launch GPU-enabled instances on KVM.

Before launching a GPU-enabled instance, you must have an active lease for a GPU-enabled flavor.

Create a lease by navigating to the *Reservations* panel and clicking *Create Lease*. In the new lease form:

- Complete the *Lease Name* and *Description* fields.
- In the *flavor* tab, select a GPU-enabled flavor (e.g., a 64 vCPU flavor with a 1 GPU slice). Note that GPU reservations are subject to hardware limits (up to 7 VMs per GPU).
- Confirm your reservation after submitting the lease request. If capacity is insufficient, the GUI will display an error message and the lease will not be created.

We do not have a way for users to check the availability of GPU resources before creating a lease. If you are unable to create a lease, you may need to wait and check back later. We are currently working on a hardware calendar to provide more visibility into GPU availability.
