Will this also work with files in subdirectories? Or do you explicitly need something like **/*.nc or similar?

I realized today that people will be doing lots of Python work on netcdf and (possibly) hdf5 files. This is a simple commit to make sure we don't commit these files.
I'll assign @shiklomanov-an to see if he agrees.
