VirtualBox is an open-source virtualization software known as a hypervisor, initially created by InnoTek, and currently owned by Oracle Corporation.
Hypervisors allow you to create and manage Virtual Machines.
A Virtual Machine (VM) emulates the physical hardware that comprises a functional host computer such as a desktop or laptop. A VM runs it's own operating system and programs using it's own kernel.
