Using the Installer (Recommended)
- Click "Download: Howland-Setup-Windows.exe" above
- When the download completes, open your Downloads folder
- Double-click the installer file
- If Windows Defender shows a warning:
- Click "More info"
- Click "Run anyway"
- Follow the installation wizard prompts
- Howland launches automatically when installation completes
The application installs to C:\Program Files\Howland with Start Menu shortcuts. A tray icon appears in the taskbar notification area.
Using the Portable Version
- Click "Download: Howland-Portable-Windows.exe" above
- Move the downloaded file to your preferred location
- Double-click the file to launch
- No installation or administrator privileges required
Configuration is stored in the same folder as the executable.
- Click "Download: Howland-macOS-ARM64.dmg" above
- Double-click the downloaded DMG file
- Drag the Howland icon to the Applications folder
- Eject the DMG
- Navigate to Applications
- Right-click Howland and select "Open"
- In the security dialog, click "Open"
Important: Gatekeeper security requires right-click β Open for the first launch. Subsequent launches work normally by double-clicking.
Debian-based Systems (Ubuntu, Debian, Mint)
Open terminal and execute:
cd ~/Downloads
sudo dpkg -i Howland-Linux.deb
sudo apt-get install -fLaunch from applications menu or run howland in terminal.
All Other Distributions
Open terminal and execute:
cd ~/Downloads
chmod +x Howland-Linux.AppImage
./Howland-Linux.AppImageFor permanent installation, move to ~/Applications or /opt.
iOS (TestFlight Beta)
- Install TestFlight from the App Store if not already installed
- Open the beta invitation link sent via email
- Tap "Accept" to join the beta
- Tap "Install" to download Howland
- Open Howland from your home screen
Android (Internal Testing)
- Accept the internal testing invitation sent via email
- Open Google Play Store on your device
- Search for "Howland" or tap the link in the invitation
- Tap "Install"

- Paste legacy code when prompted
- Review the AI-generated modern code
- Copy the result or download the file
Using the Main Window

- Select source and target languages
- Paste or upload your legacy code
- Review conversions with interactive artifacts
- Export results in your preferred format
- Open the Howland app
- Sign in with your account
- Tap the new conversation button

- Enter or paste your code
