Is observing the array length enough? Any concerns if the fills change but have the same length?

Yes, the useSlotFills hook is an odd one, it returns an array for back-compat reasons, but the only thing that really matters is the .length of the array. Ideally the hook would return just a number. Now it returns an "opaque" array with a given length but no contents.
If you review usages of useSlotFills, we always look just at the .length. The hook is asking: does this slot have any fills registered? If it doesn't, we typically don't render the slot at all, avoiding an empty element in the UI.

Splitting to multiple PR is not really possible, because the changes are interconnected: as soon as the two registries are unified, the implementation of I'm afraid that doing a really thorough informed review requires some investment into learning how I can comment the code better though, that's one thing I can do 🙂 |

Pull request overview
This PR unifies the two separate SlotFill registry implementations (context providers) into a single unified system. Previously, the codebase maintained separate registries for "children" and "portal" slot types, with duplicate Fill components. The new implementation uses a single registry that distinguishes slot types via a discriminated union (type: 'children' or type: 'portal'), consolidates the Fill components into one that conditionally renders a portal based on slot type, and eliminates the BubblesVirtuallySlotFillProvider.

This useLayoutEffect without dependencies will run after every render, potentially causing unnecessary updates and performance issues. The previous portal-based Fill implementation used useEffect instead of useLayoutEffect which may have been intentional to avoid synchronous updates. Consider either adding proper dependencies (likely [name]) or documenting why this needs to run on every render.

The reason probably is that the hook doesn't use really the children value that would be in the dependencies. And maybe some earlier version of the exhaustive deps lint rule complained about this?
Let's try to add the dependency array in a follow-up PR, seems like a good idea to me. But I don't want to further block this PR on it.

Consider clarifying what 'opaque' means in this context and whether callers truly need an array or just the length property. If only length is needed, consider returning a simpler object like { length } instead.

We're returning an array for back-compat reasons. The known consumers need to know only the length, but we're returning a full array so that legacy consumers don't fail when doing any legitimate array operation.

The output format 'fills:1' (without space after colon) is inconsistent with typical formatting conventions. Consider adding a space: fills: { fills?.length ?? 'none' }.

Unification of both
SlotFillregistries (context providers) into one that handles both types. The two types ofSlotare distinguished by atype: 'children'ortype: 'portal'field.Also the
Fillcomponent is now only one. It looks at the type of the currently registered slot and conditionally renders a portal.Only the
Slotcomponents remain separate for now, because their implementation and even the prop types are wildly different.This is still a draft, to verify how unit and e2e tests are going.
