with respect to issue 100:

code converted to python3 standard
python 3 loads and seems fine, but hasn't been extensively tested (python2 likewise)
tabs have been converted to spaces. The convention previously was mixed and python2 didn't care, but python 3 does. If tabs are preferred it's not difficult to change them back.


          add support for python 3
