The wind headings are given by their origins, so 040 winds are coming
from 040, not heading 040.

As such the compass bearings are the winds 'erly direction.
I.e. Northerly, South-Easterly.

The common format for abbreviating those headings is N'ly, SE'ly,
SSE'ly, etc.

A quick aside: is the lookup actually correct?

directions[int((current['windBearing']+11.25) / 22/5)]

Seems sorta dubious to me
