The ability to communicate why you are doing what you are doing cannot be undervalued. Remember -- the point of writing a paper is do to this, however there are other methods such as talks, blog posts, tutorials, and other means!
A great initial resource is Patrick Winston's Make It Clear book.
It is important to create and maintain a website of your project -- this is the primary way the world will learn about what you are doing! It is very saddening to learn about a cool piece of research, search for the researcher's website, and come up empty.
- Create a github organization for your project. Let's say it's called
yourproject - Create repo called
yourproject.github.ioin your organization. - Copy over and edit the example website scaffolding where all you need to do is edit markdown documents and run a build script to create your site pages
